Attitude: The Best Tool in Your Toolbox

Certain types of home repairs have problematic consequences if they cannot be completed. For example, if you set out to change a faucet and you can’t get rid of all the leaks, you won’t be able to use that sink. Even worse, if there are no shut-off valves between your main valve and your sink, you won’t be able to turn your water on. It is this kind of anxiety that can keep people from doing their own repairs.

Instead of being afraid, set up conditions so that you have the mental attitude that will help you to solve problems successfully. You need knowledge, tools and equipment, a rested mind, and a backup plan.

Before you start your project, get information from several sources. Read a couple of books from your library and look on the web for videos. What you want to find out are the possible pitfalls in your proposed project so you can think through how you might deal with them.

Think through your project and make sure you have the proper tools and materials for it. One helpful tool would be a digital camera if your project involves disassembling something that you will want to reassemble later.

Choose a time to do your project when you have had a good night’s sleep and you have some time to devote to the job. It’s actually dangerous to use tools when you are tired, angry, or upset. On top of being dangerous, a negative mindset will prevent you from solving problems. Set yourself up for success by choosing your time for the project wisely.

Finally, you can enter a project with a lot more confidence if you have a back-up plan. Maybe you have a buddy or relative whom you could call if things go in an unexpected direction. Or, maybe instead of attacking the faucet first, your first project would become cut-off valves, with a friend helping you learn how to solder copper pipes.

Your brain works at its best when you have an attitude of confidence. With some good planning, you can successfully complete projects and enjoy yourself at the same time.
