Garage Apartments
Garage apartments are also known as garrets. They can be a great place to make a home.
A lot of houses have a freestanding garage with a second story apartment. There are several reasons why this can be a great place to live. First of all, usually the homes with these garage apartments are wealthy and in nice settings, on a big lot, and may even have a nice flower garden or some elegant landscaping.
It can also be very convenient to live right next door to your landlord. This is because you can easily contact your landlord whenever you need repairs, and you can hand them the rent check at the last minute. These apartments are also small enough that you can maintain them easily and their utility bills are usually small as well.
Furthermore, if you have a small enough family to be able to comfortably live in a garage apartment, then your landlord is probably located in an area that has good schools for your children to attend. This is nice since you can send your children to good schools without having to pay extremely high rent. If you are a single parent then you really should look for this type of an inexpensive, advantageous arrangement.
There are some disadvantages to renting a garage apartment that you should be aware of. First of all, you should realize though that this is like any other rental arrangement in that you will not be able build up equity or own your own home. Secondly, you should understand that garage apartments are small, some might even call them “tight,” and there are bigger places where you could make a home.
Many cities today are moving away from manufacturing and moving toward knowledge industries. This means that there are huge buildings being abandoned and many of these are being made livable. Of course, the developers who are doing this are making good money turning these factories, mills and stores into loft apartments.
From an aesthetic point of view, lofts are great. A lot of them have huge windows because factory lighting used to be partially provided by the sun. It is also nice that the rooms can be set up with temporary barriers that can be moved whenever you want. Plus, the thick brick walls that these buildings are made out of are able to support any type of big artwork that you could possibly want.
Of course there are some disadvantages to living in an old factory or store. The main drawback is that these buildings are usually located in industrial areas that are not close to parks, shopping, or good schools. Another drawback is the windows and the ceiling. While the windows are great for letting in light, and the soaring ceilings make the room feel spacious, they are also hard to heat and cool because of how big they are. You also have to consider the fact that privacy could be a problem if you have a big family and you are living in a big loft whose rooms are simply divided by screens.
